By Debbe Daley Working on a new project with a client from Rhode Island, we discussed the scope of her vision for the first floor of her 150-year-old home in Warren, R.I. After carefully listening to her wants and needs and knowing exactly what she was looking for, we carefully derived a plan of attack for her project.

Creating a rough sketch of the existing layout of her home was the first step. Due to the fact that this was our initial meeting held at the Boston Design Center, I hadn't seen the home. Making sure our styles and personalities were a good fit, we were excited to move on to the showrooms of the design center.

Revealing that her décor had to incorporate existing antiques and family heirlooms, she also wanted a lighter, less busy space for her eyes to rest in this small historic home.

Solid fabrics would be chosen for the sofas and for window treatments. Paint on the walls would have a hit of color. Contrast on the solid furnishings would come through pillows and artwork.

Strolling through the market stalls on the second floor of the design center, we were excited to find many dining chairs and accent pieces with a French influence. The one common thread that made these pieces appealing was the detail on the frames of every chair. Most fabrics on the pieces were in a linen or burlap, textures that work well with chippie paint or distressed wood finish. These pieces had a shabby-chic feel with a stylish flare of days gone by and would fit nicely in the 150-year-old home.

Incorporating interesting dining chairs with a warm wood dining table would enhance the home's dining room. Not only was the detail noted in chair frames, but interesting mirrors with egg and dart detailed frames were also appealing.

Strolling through Antiques on 5, we found a rustic accent chair with a medium brown wood finish. The detail on this frame was accented with brass nail heads. The chair was upholstered in a vintage rust background with a green leaf motif.

Moving on to Webster & Company's showroom, more elegant furnishings and lighting were also a desire for this client. Again noting some detail in an elegant French salon sofa upholstered in a dark gray silk, was the detail between the distressed wood frame and the upholstery. A very tiny 1/8-inch cord was used to add detail, applied between the wood frame and the silk, supplementing this sofa's elegant design.

Tips for adding details to your decorated space:

* Look for furniture frames with detail.

* Nail heads can be used to accent a furniture frame.

* Embellish an upholstered piece of furniture with corded trim.

* Add an interesting pillow with detail to a solid fabric-covered chair or sofa.
