Lovers of bright-colored markers were probably thrilled with the thought of getting 24 Sharpies for free through a Facebook offer. Like similar "freebies," however, the Sharpie deal is just another social media scam.
The Facebook post claims Sharpie is giving away a free 24-set of markers to everyone for its 13th anniversary.
"Hurry up! Only 872 sets available! Claim one now!" the post claims.
If you click on the link you are taken to a third-party site, www.sharpie.com-eat.com, not Sharpie's actual website, www.sharpie.com. On the bogus site, you will asked to complete a series of questions and send the link to your friends. It's a common scam on such Facebook offers, and, in some cases, users can open themselves up to spam emails or viruses.
Sharpie has taken to its own Facebook page to clear up the confusion.
"Sharpie fans - many of you have commented about a Sharpie sweepstakes. Please note that this is not an official Sharpie giveaway, and we are not sponsoring or supporting it. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion that this has caused, and we thank you for your loyalty to Sharpie" the company said in a statement.
According to Snopes, the bogus Sharpie giveaway offer has been around since 2013. In recent years, Kohl's, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's Best Buy, Macy's, Olive Garden, Publix, Target and Walmart have all been hit by similar phony social media offers.
