With Brixton being the London Design Festival's newest design district, the heritage centre's courtyard will be 'reimagined' with We Stand As Living Monuments, an installation inspired by a poem about 'Black Heroes' written by Black Cultural Archives' co-founder, Len Garrison.
The piece asks why the legacy and contribution of Black Britons is so often overlooked. Drawing from the Black Cultural Archives' extensive collection, the installation will encourage visitors to "discover particular heroes, whilst reflecting on their own place in the world."
2MZ Director Leila Touwen said:
This partnership is about uniting the heritage and design worlds.
When Black Cultural Archives gave us Len Garrison's poem, there were lines leaping out at us. We designed an installation which we hope will make visitors curious about the poem, the people and the place.
Black Cultural Archives Director Paul Reid commented:
We are excited to partner with 2MZ for a second year as part of Brixton Design Week. The new installation will playfully create a visible interpretation of Len Garrison poem, taking us back to the mission of Black Cultural Archives to inspire future generations and promote and share a greater understanding of Black history in Britain.
We Stand As Living Monuments can be explored from 20th September.
