STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a rain barrel giveaway at the Blue Heron Park Nature Center in Annadale on Saturday, June 25.
Councilman Joseph Borelli, Sen. Andrew Lanza and Assemblyman Ron Castorina partnered with the DEP to host the event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
More than 300 free 60-gallon rain barrels will be given to single-family homeowners who pre-register for the event.
- To reserve a barrel, call Borelli's office at 718-984-5151 or Lanza's office at 718-984-4073. The barrels will only be distributed to those who have reserved one in advance.
The barrels are easy to install and connect directly to the homeowners existing downspout.
Installation kits and installation instructions will be given out.
"Using barrels to capture rainwater creates a more sustainable city be alleviating the burden that excess storm runoff has on our sewer system, decreasing floods and reducing the demand on drinking water during hot summer days," said Lanza.
According to the DEP, watering lawns and gardens can account up to 40 percent of an average household's water use. The barrels can help conserve drinking water and save homeowner's money by using the captured rain water for gardening and lawn care.
The barrels can also prevent street flooding and help keep stormwater from entering the sewer system, easing the system's pressure.
