SOMERSET – Hathaway Post 228 did not play sound baseball when it counted.
After Somerset coughed up a four-run cushion in the sixth inning, fundamental miscues once again did Post 228 in during extras, allowing visiting Acushnet to walk away with the eight-inning 10-9 American Legion Baseball District 9 South win on Thursday evening at Jim Sullivan Field.
Both teams are 7-6.
Somerset led 7-1 after three innings.
Acushnet grabbed a run during the fourth and fifth (7-3) before plating five runs in the sixth. Jacob Ashworth scored on a wild pitch, Noah Furtado's single and Matt Doane's double brought Post 265 within a run.
With two outs, a dropped routine fly scored the tying and go-ahead runs (8-7).
In the bottom of the frame, Bryan Mendez (2-for-5, 2 RBI) knotted the game 8-8, scoring Chase Stafford on an RBI base hit to center.
After Jake Faria's scoreless seventh, Acushnet (7-6) went ahead permanently the next inning.
Brett Enos (3-for-5, 3 runs) crossed home safely after Doane's pop up fell between Somerset's fielders in shallow left (9-8). Kyle Franks then scored Noah Furtado (3-for-5, RBI, 2 runs) on a single.
Post 228 (7-6) got one back during its final frame before stranding a runner on third.
Doane finished 3-for-5, scoring thrice.
Post 265 starter Colt Fitzsimmons allowed six earned runs over seven innings, but hung in long enough for the win.
Ian Furtado picked up the save.
Somerset first baseman Tim Silva hit a pair of doubles and delivered five RBI in a 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Jose Martinez was 2-for-4 while Tyler Nadeau and Justin Duarte each recorded two hits and scored twice.
