During a seemingly low-key dinner of ginger and lime chicken at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center on West 13th Street, Mark Lee of Barneys New York and the German art auctioneer Tobias Meyer each pledged $25,000 for the organization's programs. That seemed like a lot of money to drop on a Sunday night in late May.
This was the fourth Fashion Centered event, which brings members of the fashion industry to the facility.
The goal is to "introduce the fashion and creative worlds" to the center, said Glennda Testone, its executive director.
"Fashion gets a bad rap. In fact, you might not typically hear 'the goodness of people's hearts' and 'fashion' in the same sentence," she added.
Among the fashion-industry guests who showed up in mostly slim-cut sportcoats with white button-downs were jewelers Eddie Borgo and Alexis Bittar; Barneys creative director Dennis Freedman; Narciso Rodriguez, Prabal Gurung, and Siddharth Shukla and Paul Andrew.
For a fashion-centered event, there were some non-fashion people, too, like film producer John Lyons; playwright Stephen Karam; and book agent David Kuhn.
Gallerist Dominique Lévy led the pledge drive, inciting not just the donations from Messrs. Meyer and Lee, but $5,000 each from Mazdack Rassi of Milk Studios and Laurent Claquin of Kering Americas, not to mention $10,000 from her own mother. Underwritten by Marriott, the evening, which is by invitation and not ticket purchase, raised over $325,000.
