District 186 school supply giveaway at Grant Middle School

Springfield School District families in need of school supplies can stop by Grant Middle School this week and pick up items, no questions asked.

District 186 is hosting its back-to-school supplies giveaway at Grant, 1800 W. Monroe St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The supplies are intended for current students and will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. No documentation is required, according to Bree Hankins, district spokeswoman.

"It's important for our students to have everything they need on the first day so they can start school confidently, proudly and ready to learn," she said.

The first day of school for District 186 is Aug. 22.

The school supplies were collected during Saturday's annual "Stuff the Bus" organized by Horace Mann, Target, Capital Radio Group and WICS NewsChannel 20.

Backpacks collected by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum also will be available.

Hankins said the supplies from the two fundraisers used to be distributed based on requests, but the district switched to a giveaway format this year because of high demand.

"We hope we can reach more students this way," she said.

The giveaway is in addition to the longstanding First Day Fund, which distributes school supplies to more than 1,400 needy families in Sangamon County who apply.

From 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Springfield High School, the First Day Fund will distribute school supplies to students who have vouchers. Hankins said leftover supplies will be given out first come, first serve after that.

The event coincides with a free clinic offering physicals and immunizations to students at Springfield High from 9 a.m. to noon.
