Sarah Jessica Parker says her new HBO fashion is purely practical

BEVERLY HILLS — The fashion style of Sarah Jessica Parker's newest HBO character is  worlds away from the trendsetting Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City.

Parker, discussing Divorce, her new comedy, at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, said she pushed for a 1970s cinema feel in both production and costume design. Frances, who lives north of Carrie's Manhattan in New York's Westchester County, chooses practicality over high fashion, said Parker, who is working with costume designer Arjun Bhasin.

"Pretty much everything Frances wears is used, whether it's from … vintage or thrift shops along the Northeast Corridor. It's a very specific idea about somebody who has an aesthetic that will be revealed more during the season. Fashion doesn't dictate," Parker said. "She has to dress. It's required by law when you walk into a place of work. Everything is utilitarian, in a way. There's a person who's choosing it, but (the clothing) is not another character. It's the whole person in a much more subtle way."

Divorce, which also stars Thomas Haden Church, premieres on HBO on Oct. 9 (10 ET/PT).
