Well, it's finally assembled and it has awaken with a mighty, thunderous roar. With the awesome support of many manufacturers and the meticulous assembly skills from the gang at Muscle Motors, the Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals/Mopar Muscle Street Hemi giveaway engine is complete and ready to be awarded to a lucky winner.
To quote a famous line from an equally famous horror cult movie classic: "It's alive!" Saying the Giveaway Street Hemi exceeded our wildest expectations is an understatement. Mike Ware, head mad scientist at Muscle Motors, wanted to build a naturally aspirated, pump-gas "old-school" GEN II Hemi that could beat the power of the its modern-day force-fed sibling, the 6.2L Hellcat. Mike's not afraid of challenging himself and the guys in the shop. They've been building some serious power out of Mopar Wedge and Hemi motors that were originally designed over 50 years ago, so it was game on.
Since the Hellcat's been wreaking havoc on everything on the street with its 707 horses, Mike used that as a yardstick when building the giveaway 572 Street Hemi. He also wanted to make this a 21st century performer with modern-day updates, specifically on the fuel management side of things to provide better drivability for today's anemic petrol.
Muscle Motors was up to the task of exceeding that number with (dare we say it) an old-school 426 Street Hemi that first came out in 1966. When the Street Hemi went on the dyno, Mike had a feeling the elephant would make good power, but he didn't realize the insane amount of torque the beast would put out.
"We wanted to beat that 707 number of the Hellcat, and guess what: mission accomplished. We made 730 horsepower and the torque number was 760. And oh by the way, those were the averages from 3,200 rpm to 6,200 rpm," said a grinning Mike Ware. But wait, it gets even better, as peak power was 856 horsepower at 6,200 rpm while the freight train torque was 782 ft-lb at 4,900 rpm. If the target for Muscle Motors was to make over 700 horsepower, they more than exceeded that goal.
Mike says: "Deep down in my heart, I knew it could make close to 800 or even more. We've done combinations very similar to this for customers in the past and they were all in the 790 range, so I knew we were going to knock it out of the park. Heck, I think we knocked it into the next county, as the numbers on the dyno were consistently north of the 850 horsepower mark."
For a fresh motor that's still learning the optimal fuel and spark curve, it's amazing, and there's still a lot more left in the engine. "We tell the dyno just to read from 3,900 to 6,200 rpm because it is a hydraulic cam and the Hemi has a pretty heavy valvetrain. You don't want to get into valve float as bad things will happen when the valvetrain gets into chaos," commented Mike. "However, the dyno was still recording past 6,200, and at 6,275 rpm, it made 872 horsepower. So there's more to this Hemi for its owner to go have fun with," added Mike.
For over 20 years, Mike and the crew at Muscle Motors have assembled an arsenal of Mopar small-blocks, big-blocks, and Hemis in all shapes and sizes. Each does have their own idiosyncrasies and he'll tell you no two engines are ever alike and in some cases, can present their own array of challenges.
"The biggest question mark I had on this 572 cubic-inch Street Hemi build was the cylinder heads, as I hadn't used the new Edelbrock Hemi heads yet. On the flow bench, they looked really good, but it's not until you bolt them on the engine that you'll find out if they're right for the combination. Once we did the first pull, we realized the Edelbrock heads worked better than we could have ever imagined," said Mike.
Another area Mike was focused on was making sure the correct and optimal fuel and spark timing was used while getting the engine broken in on the dyno. Muscle Motors is quite familiar with the FAST EFI systems: "We built many engines using the FAST EZ EFI and they respond very well. When you plug it in, its baseline is for a smaller engine making much less horsepower than our Hemi. But over time, we've developed a baseline fuel map for an engine of this size and power output," added Mike.
By using their "secret" baseline map, it only took Muscle Motors three or four pulls to get really close to what the enormous Hemi could do. For the average performance-minded builder, they'll also find the FAST EFI EZ system easy to use and understand. Since Mike has created a high-performance power program, getting a big Hemi dialed-in only requires 2 to 4 pulls on the dyno. And Mike tells us there's more power left in the 572 Street Hemi by spending more time playing with the tune.
Mike's very affectionate for this engine and it will always have a special place in his heart. "This was the first Street Hemi Carlisle giveaway motor we did, and whoever wins it is getting an awesome piece. It's a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Street Hemi," said a grinning Mike Ware, who looked like a proud parent on graduation day.
When the winner plugs this mighty 572 cubic-inch Street Hemi into his or her car and fires it up for the first time, they'll also be grinning from ear to ear. The first time they step on the loud pedal and lay two patches of rubber for as long as the eye can see, a hysterical laugher will be heard coming from the driver's seat.
We just hope we're there to go for a ride!
