mischer'traxler unveils kinetic installation for london design biennale 2016

mischer'traxler has devised a kinetic light installation titled 'level: the fragile balance of utopia' as part of the austrian contribution for the first london design biennale 2016 hosted at somerset house. the art piece responds to the motto 'utopia by design' on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first publication of 'utopia' by thomas morus – a world classic in the discipline of social philosophy.

commissioned works from the fields of contemporary, design-oriented innovation, creativity, and research will be presented. the participating countries, which will be represented by leading designers and cultural institutions, will address the most urgent challenges society is currently faced with: sustainability, migration, environmental pollution, general availability of water, and social equality. essentially, the london design biennale 2016 aims to envisage the role of design in our common future.

the austrian contribution curated by thomas geisler, curator design collection, MAK vienna and austria design net – helped conceive mischer'traxler studio's site specific installation which fits into a gallery space of approximately 35 to 40 sq meters at the somerset house.

mischer'traxler—who work with a content-related process, examining interrelationships and complexities and how theys can be communicated, reflected upon and questioned by design—presents an 'ideal system' which responds to the theme 'utopia by design' through a complex structure that aims to represent individual and social ideals within society. the installation uses a mobile structure of individual pendant lights that reach maximum luminosity when in perfect equilibrium. each and every movement occurring in the room, whether initiated by visitors or other unpredictable elements, such as a draft of air, transforms the object's shape and brilliance. 'for us, utopia is an idea system in which personal freedom is confronted with communal interdependencies, in which ownership needs to be weighed against responsibility, and in which transparency is juxtaposed with privacy,' say mischer'traxler.

the poetic and playful nature of 'LeveL: the fragile balance of utopia' relies on design's essential and increasingly important role as an intercultural mediator. abstracting the complex theme of utopia within an object addressing both people's emotions and senses will open up various levels of access for visitors, regardless of their age,

gender, social and cultural background. 'far from patronizing visitors, play and contemplation will facilitate identification with their own socio-cultural ideas of utopia or dystopia', comments thomas geisler.
